More relevant than ever

In 2016, ICTmagazine already wrote about it: at least 76% of IT professionals were worried about security, such as security hacks during the Christmas period. They were particularly worried about the availability of staff (41%), the risk of security hacks (31%) and the IT burden of people working remotely (31%).

Let's take a look at what has happened since then

Incident 1) In a data breach at HAN University of Applied Sciences, passwords of 4,300 people were stolen. (September 2021)

Incident 2) At least five members of the House of Representatives were hacked on WhatsApp. This also happened to a member of the Senate, senior officials at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and employees of almost all ministries. (May 2021)

Incident 3) Passwords and email addresses of 32,000 users were stolen by hacking the Bax Shop forum. (August 2020)

But these aren't holiday hacks?!

That's right, but it does illustrate that hacking is a problem everywhere . And now looking at the holidays: what do you think of the attack on the Hof van Twente (December 2020)? Or the cyber hostage-taking at Maastricht University in December 2019? During Thanksgiving Day: a hostage-taking at Foxconn. They all took place during holidays, and preferably at night. FD.nl estimates that three quarters of all attacks take place outside office hours and the Christmas period in particular is an interesting, unguarded moment.
